Beauty trends change. Beautiful features don’t.
From the bold red lips of the 1940s to today’s softer, more natural aesthetic, every decade has had its own idea of the “perfect” smile.
The biggest lesson? Trends come and go—but balance, healthy lips, and a genuine smile never go out of style.

Lips on Trend by Decade

1940s: Deep, highly defined red lips, often with an emphasized cupid’s bow. The lip was meant to look polished and unmistakably feminine.

1950s: The classic glamorous red continued, but softer pinks and coral shades became popular too. Fuller-looking lips and a carefully drawn lip line were part of the polished look.

1960s: The focus shifted dramatically. Pale pink, nude, and even concealer-like lips became fashionable, often paired with dramatic eye makeup. The lips were intentionally understated.

1970s: Earth tones took over—warm brown, caramel, peach, and terracotta. Glossy lips also became increasingly popular.

1980s: Bigger and bolder. Bright reds, berries, plums, fuchsias, and strong lip liner created a more dramatic, high-impact mouth.

1990s: The brown-lip era! Brown, mauve, cinnamon, and nude shades, frequently paired with noticeably darker lip liner, defined the decade. Matte and semi-matte finishes were especially popular.

2000s: Gloss took center stage. Pinky nude, sheer pink, frosted lipstick, and ultra-shiny lip gloss created the soft, youthful “wet lip” look.

2010s: The emphasis moved toward fuller-looking lips, precise outlining, matte liquid lipstick, nude shades, and eventually the overlined lip. Contouring and lip-plumping products became part of the beauty vocabulary.

2020s: The pendulum swung back toward softness: blurred lipstick, lip oils, balms, sheer stains, glossy finishes, and “your lips but better” shades. The goal is often healthy, hydrated, effortless-looking lips rather than an obviously constructed lip.

Today: We essentially have every decade available at once. Red lipstick, brown liner, gloss, lip stains, nude lips, overlining, and barely-there balm can all be “on trend” depending on the aesthetic.
