## My 30-Day Reset: The Sane Girl’s Version of a Very Extra Diet List

A while back, I wrote a list. Not a little list. A SIXTY-item list of things to
do, eat, drink, avoid, and plug into your cell phone to lose weight. It was an extremely
abbreviated take on the [HCG Diet](http://www.hcgdietinfo.com/) and the [Turbo Protein Diet](https://link.amazon/B0amlkV9o).

I did not invent either of them, and I have not tried most of what was on that
list. (Two grapefruit AND two apples a day? Every day? My stomach filed a complaint
just reading it.)

Here’s the thing. You will realize by item #3 that doing the entire list is impossible.
Buried in there, though, are a handful of habits that are simple, cheap, and make
you feel better whether or not the scale moves. So I pulled those out, grouped them,
and tossed the rest. Think of this as a 30-day reset, not a miracle. This is for
informational purposes only, I’m not your doctor, blah blah blah. You know the drill.

## for 30 Day Reset

 * **A Big Water Bottle:** Volvic, Fiji, Evian, or plain old filtered tap. Just
   keep it with you.
 * **Comfy Walking Shoes:** You’re about to use them a lot.
 * **Fresh Fruit and Salad Greens:** Apples, grapefruit, and whatever greens you’ll
   actually eat.
 * **Green Tea, [Yerba Mate](https://link.amazon/B06CRI8Lo), and Chamomile:** One
to wake you up, one to calm you down. Wulong tea works too.
 * **Spices:** Cinnamon and hot peppers, because flavor without the fat is a beautiful
   thing.
 * **A Probiotic:** I’ve tried [Threelac](https://amzn.to/46g3tlu), but any good
   probiotic will do.
 * **A Yoga Mat and a Set of Hand Weights:** Nothing fancy. A mini trampoline is
a fun bonus if you have the room.
 * **A Bedtime Alarm:** Yes, an alarm to go TO bed. Stay with me.

##

 1. **Start Every Morning With Water:** One glass before you do anything else, including
checking your phone. Then keep sipping all day. You don’t need to chug gallons.
Drink to thirst, and a little more than you think.
 2. **Walk Outside for an Hour:** Slow and steady counts. No power-walking, no fancy
gear. Split it into two 30-minute walks if your schedule laughs at you. Get a little
real sunshine while you’re at it (with sunscreen on your face, please).
 3. **Eat Breakfast. No Exceptions.** Then spread the rest of your food into smaller
meals through the day so you never hit that “I will eat this entire bag of chips
standing at the counter” stage. Try to finish dinner a few hours before bed.
 4. **Put a Salad Next to Lunch and Dinner:** It fills you up faster and sneaks in
water and vitamins. Add an apple or grapefruit as a snack, and use cinnamon and
hot peppers to make plain food less boring.
 5. **Swap Your Drinks:** A cup of green tea or yerba mate for energy, chamomile at
night to relax. Cut back on soda, and yes, that means Diet Coke too. (I know. I
KNOW.) Stevia can stand in for sugar.
 6. **Clean Up the Pantry, Not Your Whole Life:** Skip fast food, trans fats, high
fructose corn syrup, and processed meats like bacon and hot dogs. Buy organic when
you can afford it and don’t sweat it when you can’t. Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods
    make this easier.
 7. **Move a Little Differently Each Day:** Lift weights a few times a week (anti-aging
AND metabolism, sign me up). Add yoga for flexibility and posture. Bounce on a
mini trampoline for 10 minutes if you’ve got one. Book a massage when you can,
    because you’ve earned it.
 8. **Breathe, Then Go to Bed:** Ten minutes of deep breathing twice a day. (Check
out [this post](https://bethebetty.com/breathe-to-lose-inches/) for how.) Then
lights out around 10:00 PM and up around 6:00 AM. Your body does its best repair
work while you sleep, so stop scrolling.

###

 * **Talk to Your Doctor First:** Especially before adding supplements, changing
how much you eat, or starting any cleanse. I’m not paying for your ER visit.
 * **Don’t Stop Your Meds:** The original list claimed ALL medications cause weight
gain. That’s a hard no from me. Never stop a prescription without talking to
   the doctor who prescribed it.
 * **Skip the Colonic Marathon:** The original list said 15 colonics in 30 days,
plus parasite, liver, and heavy metal cleanses. Your colon and liver already
clean themselves for free. Leave them alone.
 * **About That HCG Part:** The FDA has warned that over-the-counter HCG diet products
aren’t approved for weight loss. I’m not recommending them, and I’m not recommending
any super low-calorie plan without a doctor watching over you.
 * **Wear the Sunscreen:** The list also said 20 minutes of naked sun a day with
no sunscreen and no sunglasses. Um, no. Nothing ages your face faster.
 * **Pick Three, Not Sixty:** Start with water, walking, and breakfast. Once those
feel automatic, add another. Doing a few things every day beats doing everything
   for three days.

##

Sixty rules is a lot of rules. Eight habits is a lot more doable. Drink your water,
take your walk, eat your salad, and go to bed on time for 30 days, then see how
you feel. And if you’re still craving a Diet Coke on day 31? I won’t tell. Just
maybe take a walk first.
