Petroleum Jelly Beauty Uses: My great-grandma did not have a 12-step routine. She
had one jar, and it did whatever the day needed. Lips, cuticles, eyebrows, that
one dry patch on her elbow, and probably her hair part on a bad day. I did not believe
a single jar of Vaseline could replace my whole bag until I actually tried it. (
Spoiler: it mostly could. Mostly.)

Wartime and postwar beauty routines leaned on petroleum jelly hard because “real”
cosmetics were scarce, expensive, or both. Women used it as an eyeshadow base to
stretch a nearly-empty compact further, and dabbed it on for lip shine when a full
tube of lipstick wasn’t in the budget. It was never a trend. It was just what was
in the medicine cabinet.

## The Experiment: One Jar, Seven Days

From June 4th to June 12th, I did not touch my regular routine. Just a jar of plain
petroleum jelly and whatever was already in my shower.

**Day 1-2**, lips: Slicked on over bare lips, it’s the “my lips but shinier” look
everyone’s chasing right now with $28 lip oils. (They’re not wrong to chase it.
They’re wrong about the price.)

**Day 3,** brows: Swiped a tiny bit over brushed-up brows to hold them in place.
Held up through a full workday. Did not hold up through a nap, but nothing does.
Day 4, eyelids: Used thin as a base under cream shadow. Sounds greasy. Isn’t, if
you use restraint (I did not, the first time. Learn from me).

**Day 5,** cuticles and elbows: This is the one my great-grandma actually would
have recognized. Worked. Obviously worked. It’s petroleum jelly, this is its whole
résumé.

**Day 6-7,** “glazed skin”: Pressed a thin layer over moisturizer on cheekbones
for that dewy, wet-look finish. Convincing. A little too convincing by hour six,
when it had migrated slightly toward my hairline. FINE, I’ll blot at hour four next
time, jeez.

## The Honest Verdict

It does everything gently. It does nothing best. The brow gel holds better, the
lip [oil](https://bethebetty.com/oil-cleansing-method/) smells better, the highlighter
doesn’t slide by 3pm. But for [one jar, for $6](https://link.amazon/B03RTkMLu) if
you buy name brand, doing six jobs at a passable level? That’s not nothing.

Patch test this one first if you’ve got acne-prone skin — it’s occlusive, meaning
it seals in whatever is already on your face, good or bad. I’m not paying for your
breakout. But seriously, Vasline is ONE product that has never made me break out.

## The Betty Test

✅ Can I use it on at least three different parts of my face or body?✅ Does it
cost less than $10?❓Would my great-grandma have recognized this use for it?✅ Does
it actually finish the job, or just “kind of” finish it?❌ Am I willing to blot
my hairline at hour four?

Check out how people were using it in 1927!

## FAQ

**Is petroleum jelly bad for your face? **

Not inherently, but it seals in whatever’s underneath it, bacteria included. Clean
skin first. Patch test if you’re prone to breakouts.

**Can you use Vaseline as a highlighter?**

Yes, pressed thin over moisturizer on the high points of your face. It moves more
than a real highlighter by midday, so touch up accordingly.

**Does petroleum jelly clog pores? **

It’s occlusive rather than pore-clogging on its own, but layered over heavy products
or unwashed skin it can trap what’s already there. It’s never given me an issue.

**What did women use petroleum jelly for in the 1940s? **

Eyeshadow base, lip shine, and general skin protection during a period when cosmetics
were scarce or rationed.

It’s cheap, you don’t have to buy store brand, and you can use it on every part
of your body. (except your hair)

This one is a true beauty hero, the one we deserve.
