Marilu Henner’s Total Health Makeover

Sugar is bad, mmmkay? Let’s eliminate it. Since everyone is on a No-Carb kick this decade, it doesn’ need much explaining why the white stuff is bad for you. Excess carbohydrates means excess weight (supposedly) and it has no nutritional value. But what else does it do that’s so bad?

‘Sugar ferments in your stomach. It stops the secretion of gastric juices and inhibits the stomach’s ability to digest. So drinking a pop with your meal makes your meal basically rot in your stomach. Ew. It is the primary culprit for tooth decay, it alters your mood, it causes hyperactivity and mood swings in children, and of course, makes a lot of us overweight.

You should at least just try to eliminate all ADDED sugars. Just switching to products that use sugar substitutes isn’t a solution, either, as we discovered in Step One. Once you give up crsytal yum, your taste buds will awaken and everything will taste better and more clear.

So what CAN you use? Honey is a good replacement for refined white sugar, but it also more concentrated. Sucrose and Fructose are both sugars, but they do not over tax the pancreas to make insulin like refined sugar does. Maltose is the least concentrated and least sweet sugar substitute. Cane juice is good to use when you need to sprinkle sugar on your cereal.

Out of all the steps, this one is the hardest for me. I still don’t follow this step. I love my candy. But from past experience, if you can stop eating sugar, you will feel totally different. Once you get past the first 2 or 3 days, the cravings really do go away. I have stopped eating sugar for breakfast and it has made a world of difference. I used to eat donuts, or whatever crap they brought to work that day. By 10’clock, I would be falling asleep at my desk from crashing. Now I eat shredded wheat for breakfast with rice milk. Although it does have sugar in it, not as much as other breakfast treats. Just this change alone has made me feel better. But I still eat at least one candy bar a day. But one is better than 5, right? Isn’t it?
